Estonian hammer thrower Jüri Tamm died at the age of 64 on 22 September 2021.

Tamm was a former Soviet two-time Olympic medallist, finishing third at the 1980 and 1988 Games. He also clinched a silver in the 1987 World Cup. In May 1980, the athlete threw a hammer 80.46 meters setting a world record, but after 20 minutes his partner in the USSR national team Yuri Sedykh surpassed his result by 18 centimetres.

After his retirement as an athlete in 1998, Tamm went into politics. From 1999 to 2011, he was a member of the Estonian Parliament from the Social Democratic Party.

In addition, he was strongly committed to the development of the sport movement in Estonia, while being Vice President of the Estonian Olympic Committee from 2004 to 2008. Tamm served first as Chair of the EOC Athletes’ Commission (2002-2005), when he was also an Ex-Officio Member of the EOC Executive Committee, and then as Chair of the EOC EU Commission (2017-2021).
